Authorities Call Off Operation for Four-Year-Old Child Disappeared in Australian Wilderness
Australia's police have suspended the search for a young boy who has been lost in the wilderness for almost three weeks, after additional operations proved unsuccessful to locate any signs of the youngster.
Chronology of Incidents
The child was last seen playing outside his home on a remote sheep station in the vicinity of Yunta, about 186 miles from Adelaide, on September 27th.
His grandmother stepped away for about a short period before returning, only to realize the child gone, triggering one of the largest ground and aerial searches in the region's records.
Current Situation
Authorities - who do not suspect foul play - say they will persist investigating, but that the matter has become a "recovery mission".
Last week, authorities temporarily scaled back the operation, only to restart it on Tuesday alongside 80 defense personnel.
"Official authorities said officials were searching a wider area based on updated evaluations from survivability and rescue specialists, rather than any fresh leads."
Operation Obstacles
On Friday, officials announced that the latest hunt had not found any evidence of Gus.
"The reality that Gus is a young child, the landscape is particularly difficult, challenging and experiencing changing elements has made the searching difficult and more difficult for those engaged," police said in a release.
About 470 square kilometers - an zone roughly twice the dimensions of a major city - has now been searched, and a 12-person taskforce created earlier this week is projected to persist investigating. Police have not excluded additional operations of the area in the time ahead.
