Doris Makes Irish Team While McCarthy Left Out
Returning head coach the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall matches, but lock McCarthy misses out.
The captain, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in early May, recently returned to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to face the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent because of injury, while number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-man squad, however Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster duo Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "backup".
After playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a largely experienced selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again compete for the starting fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with the two players poised to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the third number 10 chosen with Farrell deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at full-back.
Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and played in Ireland A's loss by England in the English city earlier this year.
The 22-year-old was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, while experienced Ulster lock Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for the captain if the captain fails to recover fitness in time to face New Zealand.
The national team will meet in the capital on Monday before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
