Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

His legal representative filed the plea representing him in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

His attorney stated he would seek to have the proceedings thrown out for several factors including that his client, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was charged soon after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the judge they aimed to submit multiple legal requests to terminate the case before a court case, stating the legal action was vindictive and that a US attorney was wrongfully assigned to assume control of the case.

James Comey's legal matter was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from the former president after his investigation into a different political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

James Comey came across in good spirits as he came into the court on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and making jokes. He was supported by his partner, his wife and offspring his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration recently fired.

After listening to the judge recite his rights and the dual charges against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was questioned if he comprehended the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the proceedings.

Background Context

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was dismissed about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the period, the director was overseeing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he declared just days before the national vote that he was examining Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against the candidate were never brought, resulting in criticism from Republicans as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors allege Mr Comey lied to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he misled the Senate by stating he had not permitted a person at the FBI to release to news outlets details about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and slow" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media the former director posted to his Instagram after he was accused, he declared he was wrongly accused and accused Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"Our household have understood for years that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he commented. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The charges against James Comey came after Trump published on online platforms calling for his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, charge James Comey and others.
