King Charles Officially Removes Prince Andrew of Royal Highness Title and Prince Title
Through a definitive action, the reigning monarch has formally removed Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his Royal Highness attribute and his title of prince.
These alterations were formalized by issuing royal documents under the Great Seal of the Realm, that have been recorded in the UK's official public record.
The official notice declared: “His Majesty has been pleased by royal instruments under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to possess the style, title or attribute of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”
A separate record affirmed the stripping of the dukedom from the peerage list, with immediate effect.
The notice stated: “The king has been pleased by royal warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his government minister to cause the Duke of York to be removed from the roll of the peerage.”
Context of the Royal Action
This decision comes after mounting scrutiny over Andrew's links to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including the release of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.
Giuffre claimed that she was assaulted by the former prince after being trafficked by Epstein, allegations that Mountbatten Windsor has always strenuously denied.
Mechanism of Title Removal
Charles utilized his monarchical powers—recognized rights held by the monarch—following discussions with Cabinet Office officials, instead of through legislative action.
Letters patent and warrants are instruments of this authority, used to grant or revoke titles and honors.
Since the Royal Highness designation is granted by letters patent, it can be revoked through the same instrument.
Further Measures and Backing
Following the palace statement, the lord chancellor was directed to draft the required paperwork for the title removals.
This action also includes Mountbatten Windsor relinquishing his tenancy on Royal Lodge, a thirty-room royal property where he has lived for twenty years.
Officials fully supported the king's decision.
Retained Honor
Despite the stripping of honors, it was announced that Mountbatten Windsor will keep his South Atlantic medal, granted for his role as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
