Premier League Updates: Hannibal Suspended for Spitting; City Boss Insists 'Defence Must Improve'
This week's English football developments, a notable midfielder was given a lengthy suspension, a head coach has pointed out a defender's errors to make an argument, and the Manchester City manager has demanded defensive betterment after a chaotic win.
1. Mejbri Given Four-Game Ban and Financial Penalty
Burnley's player Hannibal Mejbri has been issued a four-game suspension and a financial fine following misconduct in October's match against Leeds United. The governing body stated the player was referred a separate regulatory commission following allegations where he spat towards visiting fans at the 67-minute mark during a 2-0 victory for Burnley.
An FA statement read: “A disciplinary panel has sanctioned Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri for his actions in the top-flight match against Leeds on 18 October. It was alleged that the player behaved in breach of the rules of football or in a poor way and/or using offensive and/or unacceptable behaviour through spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United fans.”
The statement added, “Mejbri later accepted the charge, and the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-game suspension and a fine following proceedings. The panel's full explanation for its decisions will be published at a later date.” The team, now 19th in the Premier League table, visit 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.
Maresca Singles Out Adarabioyo's Errors to Prove an Argument
The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of seasoned players is no an issue for his team, pointing out how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from playing poorly during a 3-1 loss against Leeds United.
Maresca, who manages the youngest team in the Premier League, does not feel that mentality played a part in the setback. He made his case by singling out Tosin, Chelsea's oldest player on the pitch, who delivered an error-strewn performance at the back.
“People always mention experience when we fail to win,” the coach said. “After we defeated Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, nobody was talking about experienced personnel. I understand that when we don’t win, people are always looking for the reason why, but in my view the reason why we lost against Leeds was not down to inexperience, it’s because we were not at our best.”
Maresca continued, “Who was the oldest one for us on the pitch? It was Tosin. Was he good? So, it isn't related to experience. It's that those 11 men, they were not good enough.”
3. Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Has to Improve'
The Manchester City manager has stated the champions have learnt from their recent thriller against Fulham with the episode is now in the past. City held on to claim a 5-4 win during a incredible clash at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with almost 60 minutes played.
Coming after they fought off a comeback and won 3-2 in the prior game, prompting further doubts about whether City possess resilient enough to mount a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “That game is behind us,” Guardiola commented. “Valuable lessons, hopefully. In the Premier League, at all the clubs, one must take onboard what happens performances and bad things and think of the next one.”
“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We try to analyse the cause, so as not to allow the goals. With the three goals scored by Leeds, and five by Fulham it shows the two versions, correct? Therefore, always done plenty of good things. But how many shots on target did Leeds ? Three? They scored two. It’s not good. And shots on target did Fulham have? Five, six? So, the average of chances conceded we can see too high. We have to improve.”
4. Newcastle Focus on Defenders' Deals
The Magpies' new sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made contract discussions involving important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda for the club. He arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and was pleased to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali has a contract extending until 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
That has left Wilson free to focus on talks with Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s agreement ending in 2027 and Botman's a year later, Newcastle's efforts have assumed a certain urgency.
“The initial few days in the job is when I found that Sandro’s deal was significantly more secure than the one I had thought,” said Wilson. “But it’s no secret that we wishes to extend Tino’s contract and also would want to extend Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are underway.”
Manager Eddie Howe is without Botman for the home game with Burnley on Saturday, and he expected to remain sidelined for another week.
Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start for West Ham
The Hammers' manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá will return to start for the side face Brighton on Sunday, after serving a ban following a sending-off against Liverpool.
“That incident is in the past,” Nuno said. “I am confident it won't be repeated as he himself acknowledged his mistake. We discussed it in the dressing room. I am positive it is over and it will not be repeated.”
He also understands the significant strain facing his team, who are in the relegation zone before the weekend fixtures. “We can't avoid it,” he admitted. “It is a reality. We have to face it. We are fighting for survival. We cannot shy away from it.”
Arteta Pleased with Striker Deputy Merino
Mikel Merino may keep his place leading the line for Arsenal central striker despite their regular frontmen return from injury. Merino has been playing as an emergency No 9 due to fitness issues for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
He scored Arsenal’s opener against Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second goal during a 2-0 victory which preserved {their|
