The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Journey with a Touch of Family-Friendly Preteen Love Story
In this cartoon adventure for preteens, the world of fairies is dedicated to collecting baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and leaving treasure beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous gnome he expected.
An Unlikely Connection and Common Enemy
Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings as one. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the other. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered sorts, given to stealing whatever they fancy, while goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and technologically advanced.
Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to unite against, and that need is met in the form of a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
There aren’t all that many children’s animations targeting the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds are watching in lieu of Twilight. If your child is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
