Thomas Tuchel Questions Home Crowd Support Following Dominant Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel expressed his disappointment that the Three Lions team did not receive stronger backing from the Wembley spectators during their commanding friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
The manager was satisfied to see his squad continue their winning momentum, with finishes from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Saka inside the first 20 minutes settling the match. But, he was not content with the atmosphere at the national stadium.
“With limited training days to prepare against a well-trained team and we excelled,” the coach remarked. “It could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the additional ones. It was quiet. There was no any energy back from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you provide in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them get away. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s regrettable because the squad deserved better encouragement today.”
“I support this statement. There’s nothing more than being 3-0 in a rivalry match. I hoped for a bit more backing in moments where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to support us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to refocus, but that’s football and that is it.”
Selection Choices Justified by Display
Away from potentially starting a fight with fans, the manager also raised eyebrows by omitting Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. But the decision was validated by Morgan Rogers excelling in the No 10 position and netting his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” Tuchel explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his spot.”
Bellamy Seeks Lessons from Defeat
Craig Bellamy hopes that Wales, who face Belgium in a crucial World Cup qualifier on next week, learn from their disappointing performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this game,” the manager commented. “I need to see our current level. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? Today gives me inspiration.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was substituted at the break after clattering into a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team face Latvia in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
