United Kingdom Broadens Methanol Toxicity Warning Roster with 11 Destinations
British government has placed eleven further nations to its travel warning roster about the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.
This updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.
Only a few weeks ago, the government had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, following multiple notable cases like the deadly loss of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?
Methanol is a toxic industrial alcohol often utilized in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for drinking.
While it is generated during the manufacture of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.
However in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into alcoholic drinks to save money, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.
Government Guidance for Travellers
Government minister the minister emphasized that every traveler should know the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"While having drinks overseas, opt for trusted places and avoid local brews or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.
"In case something feels off, such as a fatigue that's way worse than normal or sight issues – seek medical attention fast."
The complete roster of nations identified as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
