World Health Organization Faces Major Staff Reduction After US Funding Pullout

The international public health organization has announced intentions to reduce its workforce by nearly a fourth – totaling more than 2,000 positions – before the middle of 2026.

Funding Crisis Prompts Substantial Reorganization

The move comes after the United States, previously the agency's largest donor, pulled out financial support previously this period.

The US government had been contributing about eighteen percent of the organization's total budget, causing a substantial budgetary shortfall.

Projected Workforce Reductions

According to organizational projections, the workforce is expected to drop from 9,401 posts in January 2025 to approximately 7,030 by June 2026.

The reduction of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and natural attrition.

"This year has been among the toughest in our existence, as we undertook a painful but essential journey of prioritisation and realignment," commented the organization's leader.

Budget Shortfall Remains

This Switzerland-headquartered body now faces a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, amounting to nearly a fourth of its total budget.

The amount represents an reduction from a previous estimated gap of $1.7bn reported in May.

Excluded Finances

The financial projections do not include a further $1.1bn in expected funding from current discussions with various contributors.

A representative for the agency stated that the current unfunded portion of the biennial budget is actually lower than in earlier years, attributing this to multiple factors:

  • A smaller overall budget size
  • Initiation of a new donor outreach effort
  • Higher in member states' mandatory contributions

The realignment initiative is now approaching its end, paving the way for the agency to progress with a renewed structure.
